Your contact lens appointment
Your optometrist will examine your eyes and chat to you about the different contact lens options to best suit your eyes, individual requirements and lifestyle. The range of products available is increasing all the time, so the probability of finding a lens to suit you is high.
When you have been fitted with contact lenses our team will take time and care to ensure you know how to insert, remove and care for your new contact lenses.
Whether you are long-sighted, short-sighted, have astigmatism, need reading glasses or wear varifocal glasses, your optometrist at Campbell & McDearmid will be able to discuss the contact lens options available to you.
Contact lenses can be supplied to you to correct long-sight, short-sight, astigmatism and presbyopia. Our Optometrists can also fit contact lenses to help manage keratoconus.
We are experienced at fitting contact lenses for children and again can offer many options for different prescriptions and uses (e.g. daily wear or occasional wear for sporting activities). Physically, children’s eyes can tolerate contact lenses from an early age, and at Campbell and McDearmid, each child will be assessed individually with the decision as to whether or not they are suitable for contact lens wear based on many different factors.

We offer a free trial on disposable lenses; you only pay the initial consultation fee, so you can try before you buy. We only supply high quality lenses from leading manufacturers such as Alcon, Johnson & Johnson, Cooper Vision, NO7, Mark Ennovy, David Thomas and Bausch & Lomb
Different contact lens options
Daily disposable
These are worn once during waking hours then thrown away. They are comfortable, convenient and hygienic. Also suitable for occasional wear e.g. sport & holidays.
Daily disposable contact lenses are available to correct long-sight, short-sight, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Planned replacement: fortnightly, monthly, 3 monthly
Many of these lenses are made from the latest silicone hydrogel materials which allow higher levels of oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye, promoting improved eye health, comfort and reduced end of day drying. They are worn during waking hours, removed and disinfected before wearing again.
Fortnightly, monthly and 3 monthly contact lenses are available to correct long-sight, short-sight, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Gas permeable lenses
These can provide more stable vision in cases of high prescriptions or those with eye conditions like keratoconus and can also allow high levels of oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye. They can take longer to adapt to but can last longer than soft lenses.
Toric (for Astigmatism)
Whilst short and long sighted prescriptions can be corrected with standard "spherical" contact lenses, astigmatic prescriptions require a "toric" contact lens. These more specialised lenses allow better accuracy at correcting the distortion that's seen at all distances with an astigmatic or "rugby-ball shaped" eye. Toric lenses are now available in more and more varieties, including daily disposable, fortnightly and monthly reusable, and in traditional hydrogel and breathable silicone hydrogel materials.
Available for Short Sight, Far Sight, Astigmatism and Presbyopia (Varifocal).
Varifocal (for Presbyopia)
As our eyes age, the crystalline lens inside becomes less flexible and can no-longer change shape to vary its focus. This means that on average after the age of 45-50, we can find that we need extra help adjusting our focus from distance to near.
These Varifocal contact lens options provide a stronger prescription for near, allowing you to read more comfortably without glasses, whilst maintaining distance vision at the same time! Multifocal contact lenses are now available in more and more varieties, including daily disposable, monthly reusable, traditional hydrogel, silicone hydrogel and gas permeable lens materials.
Available for Short Sight, Far Sight, Astigmatism and Presbyopia (Varifocal).
Contact lens aftercare
Regular check-ups are essential when you wear contact lenses to ensure your eyes remain healthy and to allow your Optometrist to ensure you always have the latest, optimum lens for you. These visits are generally advised every 6 months, more frequently if you are a new wearer.
